How to Tell If You Have Bed Bugs

Look for these signs, especially around the bed:

• Live bugs. Adults are flat, reddish brown and about the size of an apple seed. Young ones are smaller and paler.
• Fecal spots. Clusters of dark dots, like marker ink, on mattress seams, box spring fabric, the bed frame and the wall behind the headboard.
• Shed skins. Pale, empty shells in seams and corners.
• Eggs. Tiny white ovals, about 1 millimeter, tucked into crevices.
• Blood smears. Small rust-colored stains on sheets and pillowcases.
• Bites. Itchy welts, often in a line or cluster, on skin exposed during sleep.

If you catch a bug, put it in a sealed bag or tape it to an index card. It helps confirm identification quickly.

Where Bed Bugs Hide

Bed bugs stay close to where people rest. Start with the bed and work outward:

• Mattress seams, tufts, piping and labels
• Box spring fabric, corners and the wooden frame inside
• Bed frame joints, screw holes and headboard backs
• Nightstands, especially drawer joints
• Upholstered sofas and recliners where someone sleeps or naps
• Baseboard gaps, carpet edges, outlet covers and picture frames near the bed

What Bed Bug Treatment Involves

1. Inspection. We confirm bed bugs are present and map which rooms and furniture are affected. In attached housing, we ask about neighboring units.
2. Preparation list. You get a room-by-room list of what to do before the first treatment (see below).
3. First treatment. Beds, furniture, baseboards and cracks in affected rooms are treated using targeted applications, steam on fabrics and seams where appropriate, and vacuuming of heavy areas.
4. Mattress and box spring encasements. Zippered, bed-bug-rated covers trap any bugs inside and remove hiding places, so you can keep the mattress.
5. Follow-up treatment. Bed bug eggs are not reliably killed by treatments, so a second visit is scheduled about two weeks later to catch newly hatched bugs. Some cases need a third.
6. Final check. We inspect again to confirm there is no new activity.

How to Prepare for Bed Bug Treatment

Preparation makes a big difference in whether treatment works the first time.

• Strip all bedding and wash it in hot water, then dry on high heat for at least 30 minutes. Heat in the dryer is what kills bed bugs.
• Bag clothing from dressers and closets in affected rooms, dry it on high heat, and keep it sealed in clean bags until treatment is done.
• Reduce clutter around the bed. Bed bugs hide in stacks of paper, boxes and piles of clothes.
• Pull the bed and furniture a few inches away from the walls.
• Do not move furniture or belongings to other rooms or to a friend's house. That spreads bed bugs.
• Do not throw away a mattress without wrapping it and marking it; carried unwrapped through the home, it drops bugs along the way.
• Do not use foggers. They do not reach bed bugs in cracks and can scatter them to new rooms.

What Affects the Cost of Bed Bug Treatment

• Number of rooms affected. A single bedroom caught early costs less than bugs spread to living room furniture and several bedrooms.
• Amount of furniture and clutter that needs treating or inspection.
• Number of follow-up visits needed to catch hatching eggs.
• Encasements for each mattress and box spring.
• Attached units. In apartments and duplexes, adjoining units may need inspection to prevent reinfestation.
