Identify the Cockroach Before Treating It
If the roaches are about half an inch long, light brown, with two dark stripes behind the head, they are German cockroaches and they are breeding inside. If they are an inch or longer, or you mostly see them at night near drains, doors and the garage, they are outdoor species coming in, and the fix is mostly on the outside of the house.

Signs of a German Cockroach Infestation
- Tiny black specks like ground pepper in cabinet hinges, drawer corners and on top of door frames
- Brown, capsule-shaped egg cases about 1/4 inch long
- Cockroaches around the stove, dishwasher, refrigerator motor or microwave
- A musty, oily odor in cabinets when the infestation is large
- Roaches out in daylight, which usually means hiding spots are crowded
German cockroaches reproduce fast. One female can produce several egg cases, each with dozens of nymphs, so a few sightings can become hundreds in a couple of months.
How German Cockroach Treatment Works
German cockroaches are treated inside, where they breed, with a combination of methods:
- Gel baits placed in small dots in hinges, cracks and behind appliances. Roaches eat the bait and spread it to others in the harborage.
- Insect growth regulators, which stop nymphs from maturing into breeding adults.
- Targeted crack and crevice treatment into voids where they hide, such as gaps behind the backsplash and under the sink.
- Vacuuming of heavy harborage areas to remove live roaches and egg cases.
- Follow-up visits about two weeks apart to catch nymphs that hatch from egg cases the first treatment could not reach.
German cockroaches can develop aversion to certain baits, so we change bait types when a population is not responding.
How to prepare for cockroach treatment
- Clear out the cabinets under the kitchen and bathroom sinks.
- Put food in sealed containers and clean up grease on the stove and counters.
- Do not use store sprays or foggers. They contaminate baits so roaches avoid them, and foggers can push roaches deeper into walls.
- After treatment, avoid cleaning inside cabinet hinges and cracks where bait was placed.
Getting Rid of American and Turkestan Cockroaches
These cockroaches live outside and wander in. Treating the kitchen will not stop them. The work focuses on where they come from and how they get in:
- Treating outdoor harborage: water meter and irrigation boxes, sewer cleanouts, block wall gaps, ivy and ground cover
- Checking floor drains, tub drains and unused sinks. A drain trap that dries out lets roaches come up from the sewer line. Running water in unused drains once a week helps.
- Sealing gaps under exterior doors with door sweeps and closing openings around pipes
- Treating the perimeter of the house and the garage
What Affects the Cost of Cockroach Control
- Species. German cockroach work involves more indoor detail and follow-up than an exterior treatment for American cockroaches.
- Size of the infestation. Roaches seen only at night in one spot take fewer visits than daytime activity in several rooms.
- Number of follow-up visits needed to break the egg-hatching cycle.
- Clutter and access. Crowded cabinets and appliances that cannot be moved make treatment slower.
- Multi-unit buildings. In apartments and attached homes, roaches move between units through plumbing walls, and treating one unit alone may not solve it.

Why Oxnard Cockroaches Stay Active Outdoors All Year
Oxnard's winters rarely get cold enough to slow outdoor cockroaches. With mild temperatures all year, those populations do not crash in winter the way they would inland or further north.

Does one cockroach mean an infestation?
One large roach near a door or drain usually means one wandered in from outside. One small German cockroach in a cabinet is more concerning, because they rarely travel alone. Watch for more at night with the lights off.
Why do I see big cockroaches after rain?
Rain floods sewer lines, meter boxes and ground cover, pushing American and Turkestan cockroaches out and sometimes indoors.
Do cockroaches come in on grocery bags and boxes?
